Shibden Hall
Shibden Hall is a 15th century Grade II listed building, built
in 1420 (during the reign of the Lancastrian King Henry V) by William Otes,
a clothier. The hall was owned by various families: the Saviles; the Waterhouses;
the Hemingways (cousins of the Listers); and for its last 300 years of private
ownership, by the Listers. Anne Lister (1791-1840), famous for writing coded
diaries revealing, among other things, her lesbianism, once owned Shibden Hall.
The house is owned today by Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council, and with
the assistance of Lottery Heritage Fund monies is run as a museum, as it has
been since 1934 following the death of the final Lister heir, John. The museum
reflects the life of the house through the ages
