The Red House
The Red House was once the home of Charlotte Bronte’s
close friend, Mary Taylor. In Charlotte’s famous novel, Shirley, the house
is made synonymous with ‘Briarmains’. Charlotte knew the house well,
visiting Mary there on many occasions.
Today the house, originally built in 1660, is a museum reflecting a family
home of the 1830s. There is a Charlotte Bronte exhibition entitled ‘The
Secret’s Out’, detailing her links with the area; another facinating
exhibition called ‘Spen Valley Stories’ housed in the restored Cartsheds,
revealing the more recent history of the Spen Valley through the memories and
thoughts of local people; as well as beautifully recreated period gardens.
