National Coal Mining Museum For England
The museum is built on the site of two previously working
collieries on the western coal measures (Caphouse and Hope Pit). At the museum
it is possible to enter a cage and descend 450 feet into a real mine to explore
the passageways where coal was once mined. Visit the bathhouse where men would
clean up after a day in the mine – it seems as if they only left yesterday
- or the museum exhibits to get an idea of mining life throughout England’s
industrial history, including the appalling exploitation of children in the
19th century.
Heritage Lottery and other funding has transformed the site into a national
as well as local treasure.
