Wellgate

The Wellgate Shopping Centre in Dundee is a three level building with a shopping mall on each level. These levels are interlinked by lifts, escalators and a pedestrian ramp thus providing easy movement between levels.

The shopping centre is built on the site of an old shopping street named Wellgate which linked the residential Hilltown to the North and the prime traditional shopping street in Dundee named Murraygate to the South. Obviously this was a very busy thoroughfare and the Wellgate rapidly developed into an extension of the retail offer present within the Murraygate. The shopping centre now provides that link and benefits from the traditional pedestrian movement within the area which, in turn, is reflected in the numbers of customers entering the building which is approx 200,000 per week.

Overgate

The name Wellgate derives from the old Scots "wellgait" which means the walk to the well; in this case the walk from Dundee city centre to collect water from Our Ladys Well which was situated to the North of the Wellgate (there is a public house at the North end of the centre named the Ladywell which underlines this fact)

Finally, for people who are interested in such phenomena, the centre is purported to have it's own resident ghost - this lady is said to be responsible for the creaking sometimes heard in the building at night, sceptics claim it is merely the building cooling down - I leave it to you to draw your own conclusions.
