One of the more famous streets in York: Stonegate. At one time the rents on this street were the highest in Europe per square metre but I'm unsure if that it is still the case.

Shopping in York is a pleasure York has plenty for you! York's city centre is compact and can be easily traversed on foot. There are shops for all taste's and budgets, ranging from the large department stores to tiny specialist shops. A slow walk down the famous Stonegate can take in ethnic sculptures, perfumed candles, tourist memorabilia and designer gowns.
Any town or city would not be complete without a market and York boasts arguably one of the best daily open markets in the North. Newgate market has 120 stalls in a market square within Europe's largest single pedestrianised area. Newgate market is open seven days a week and can be found right at the heart of the city between York minster and Parliament street.
The market is full of stalls selling something for everyone every day offering a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, clothing, flowers, as well as a good selection of fresh fish and meat.
Shopping for everyday needs! York has like most towns and cities, a great selection of large complexes for out of town shopping.
There are three main out-of-town shopping centres,
Where's there is a selection of retail and industrial units to suit all that includes many of the large chains. Here you can visit the Vue cinema or go ten-pin bowling or indulge in some of the eateries that are positioned around the complex. Parking is free and plentiful.
There are frequent bus services from York city centre: Services 18 and 18A run from the city centre to Clifton Moor every hour throughout the day, Monday to Friday, every half hour on Saturdays. 19A, 19B and 19C run from Monks Cross, via the city centre, to Clifton Moor, departing town every half hour, Monday to Saturday.

This is York's newest shopping centre and is themed on the classic American shopping template, again it host's many of the latest high street names and discount brands with a good selection of fast food outlets. For the more adventures the site is home to York's water world and F1 Racing complex. Parking is free and plentiful.
There are frequent bus services from York city centre: the MX6 service runs non-stop from the Stonebow in York city centre to Monks Cross every 20 minutes.

Designer Outlet (McArthur Glen) - mainly designer-label clothing
The indoor complex is home to over 100 designer named stores that are stocked with discount best buys! Including top names like Dolce & Gabbana, Paul Smith, Body Shop, Armani, to name a few it also hosts some smaller branded names that have interesting wares, if you feel peckish during the day there are numerous good food outlets on the first floor to satisfy all tastes. Thursday is late night shopping where the outlet is open until 8.00pm. Parking is free and plentiful.
There are frequent bus services from York city centre: take the McArthurGlen Designer Line shuttle bus from York Station every 10 minutes, or the Arriva Yorkshire bus number 415 from Selby to Piccadilly, York every 20 minutes.

Street entertainment
York's street entertainment is diverse ranging from the single musician to a full concert you can sit back in one of the numerous street cafes and experience good entertainment when shopping in York's city centre!
Parliament Street (built by the Victorians) is lively at times, with street fairs and entertainers. York University has an excellent Music Department which enhances the usual collection of buskers to be found entertaining around York's streets and squares. King's Square is a popular place for street entertainers where there are some very good juggling acts at times.
