A short circular walk that includes a steady ascent, steep descent and some muddy sections on the return Chanctonbury Ring is a great spot with views all around. There are no refreshments along the way, so it is advisable to bring a picnic to enjoy at the top.

OS 1:25000 Explorer 121
Distance 4.5 km / 2.8 milesTo get to the start of the walk from Worthing, head north on the A24 and turn right at the roundabout at Washington onto the A283. After 2.5 km turn right where signposted to Chanctonbury Ring and follow the road to a car park at GR TQ 145 124.
Up the Hill
The road soon turns into a track that starts by heading straight up the hill. On entering the woods it swings round to the right and then the left around some big trees with rope swings hanging from them. The track continues to climb diagonally across the wooded hillside with the upward slope to your right and the drop to the left until it emerges out of the trees onto the main ridge of the South Downs.
Along to the Ring
Turn right and follow the South Downs Way up short a slope at the top of which, Chanctonbury Ring comes into view. Go through the gate and follow the track and cross over to the ring. Stop a while and enjoy the views.
Down and Back to the Car
At the other side of the ring, bear right away from the South Downs Way and head across the field to the side of the hill. Go through the small gate and follow the path that steeply descends diagonally across the hillside with the upwards slope on the left and drop to the right. At the bottom turn right onto a track which follows underneath the hillside all the way back to the car park.
