The Olympic Games celebrations come to Wolverhampton with a summer of activities aimed at the city's young sporting stars.
Wolverhampton City Council's Sport Development team is hosting a series of events to get children aged from eight to 15 in the mood for this year's XXIX Olympiad in Beijing, China.
The sporting summer kicks off when Aldersley Leisure Village hosts the Norwich Union star:track scheme.
The week long event, from Monday, July 28, to Friday, August 1, running between 9.30am to 1.30pm each day, gives youngsters in two age categories - eight to 11 and 12 to 15 years - the chance to try out a wide range of athletic disciplines.
They include track events such as the hurdles and short and long distance running along with field events including the high, long and triple jumps, javelin, discus, shot putt and more.
Entry costs £30 for the whole week and everyone taking part will get a T-shirt, goodie bag and certificate to say they took part.
Then the Sport Development team will be staging their own series of Mini Olympics, in which youngsters will be able to have a go at a range of sports including athletics, cricket, rugby, hockey, volleyball and more.
Three Mini Olympics will be held, each of which will run for three consecutive days. The first takes place at Our Lady and St Chad Sports College on Old Fallings Lane, Wolverhampton, from Monday, August 4, until Wednesday, August 6, with another at the same venue from Monday, August 18, to Wednesday, August 20. In between, the action moves to Aldersley Leisure Village from Monday, August 11, until Wednesday, August 13.
The Mini Olympics run from 8.45am to 3.15pm each day with the three-day course costing £30 per person.
Amy Baker, Sport Development Officer, said: "All eyes will be on the Beijing Olympics this summer and we are delighted to be able to offer youngsters here in Wolverhampton the chance to have a go at improving their sporting skills - while having great fun at the same time.
"Both of these programmes are really enjoyable and those taking part will be able to try out a whole range of sports - some of which they may never have played before."
