Summer festivities at The Public - Saturday 19th - Sunday 20th July

  Following the launch celebrations, The Public in West Bromwich presents its first season of events, starting this weekend (Saturday 19th - Sunday 20th July) with free live music and a theatre show for all the family. The first weekend programme is as follows:SATURDAY 19TH & SUNDAY 20TH JULY
Come and enjoy an evening and afternoon of live jazz presented by Major Key Studios, The Public's resident music factory - perfect for a Saturday night out or a leisurely Sunday afternoon. PINKTANK 8PM SATURDAY 19th JULYDuets for Django. Paul Vernon Chester, one of the foremost Gypsy Jazz Guitarists, plays firmly in the Django tradition. Having shared the stage with some of the world's best Gypsy Jazz musicians, Chester has become increasingly sought after on the jazz guitar scene of the UK and Europe.  He is supported by his long-term accompanist and cousin. PINKTANK 1PM SUNDAY 20TH JULYTipitinaTipitina made a welcome return for their third Birmingham International Jazz Festival this month, and 2008 is seeing an incredible breakthrough year for this trio whose diverse backgrounds range from gospel to the great New Orleans piano tradition. Following the release of their debut CD, Tipitina's reputation is steadily growing with appearances across Europe, including the Bordeaux Jazz Festival and Copenhagen and UK gigs such as the Brecon Jazz Festival and BBC Summer Festival at the NEC.
SATURDAY 19TH & SUNDAY 20TH JULYPUBLIC SQUARE 10am-4pm The Black Maze This is an event for anyone not afraid of the dark, and everyone who loves a good ghost train. Suitable for children five years plus, and accompanied by an adult, this is a thrilling five minute journey into the darkness of your own imagination.  The Black Maze doesn't look very big from the outside but once you dare to enter, its dark twisting passages are filled with unexpected sensations, sights and sounds. Like a computer game come to life, you are at the heart of the action. Your task is simple; find a corridor full of stars.Built in the back of a lorry by Birmingham-based theatre company Stan's Café, The Black Maze has been a hit with adults and children of all ages wherever it has gone - from Budapest to a Devon beer garden.  Come and explore it for yourself.
David Clarke, Project Director of The Public, comments:  "We have organised a programme of events throughout the summer to give the local community some great weekend entertainment for free.  We have been delighted with the numbers of people who have come to have a look around the building and we would like to invite those that haven't to come and join in the fun."All the events over the weekend at The Public are free and open to all.
