Bob Geldof Announces Support for Missing People Charity

Bob Geldof, founding partner of Groupcall - the leading provider of text and voice messaging systems for the education sector - announced support for the charity Missing People in London yesterday (10.01.2008). Launching the partnership, Mr Geldof presented an initial cheque for £10,000 to the Chief Executive of Missing People on the Groupcall stage at BETT, the world's largest educational technology event in Olympia, London (9-12 January 2008)Groupcall, whose Messenger service allows schools to simultaneously send voice or text messages to the landlines or mobile phones of parents, staff or other contacts in any language for a low monthly subscription fee, will donate 10% of the value of all new Groupcall Messenger subscriptions to the charity. Bob Geldof said: "Groupcall is pleased to be a corporate supporter of Missing People - a charity that does so much for young runaways, missing and unidentified people, their families and others who care for them. "I first became involved in Groupcall when they provided me with the reassurance I needed that my daughters had arrived at school safely after a journey across London. By supporting Missing People we hope to be able to assist the charity in their continued search for all those that are missing."The partnership comes as Missing People continues to asks companies to  ‘do it for missing children': The fundraising appeal aims to raise £1.4 million and to publicise missing children in new ways such as stickers on London refuse trucks and the promotion of video appeals with YouTube. Paul Tuohy, Chief Executive Officer of Missing People said. "Missing People is absolutely delighted to be a beneficiary of Groupcall's Messenger system - an early and effective alert to parents that their child is absent from school."

About Groupcall
"There is a lot of common ground between the work of Missing People and what Groupcall's Messenger system can offer in helping to keep pupils where they should be - in school," explains Groupcall's Lawrence Royston. "Together, we will raise the profile of what schools can do to help minimise the risk of pupils running away before they do, but, in the event that a pupil does go missing, we can ensure schools have the tools at their disposal to quickly identify and act upon their absence."More than two thirds of young people under 18 run away deliberately. The majority are teenagers running away from home, in most cases due to conflict with parents but sometimes in order to escape abuse, or due to problems at school. Some teenagers leave due to a breakdown in relationships with parents, and can remain missing for several years. Around two fifths of young runaways sleep rough while missing and almost one third of young runaways have stayed with a stranger. Groupcall Messenger allows schools to simultaneously send voice or text messages to the landlines or mobile phones of parents, staff or other school contacts in any language for a low monthly subscription fee. This is making First Day Contact more easily achievable.
  • It is the only system which reads data live and in real-time from all major school management systems.
  • It enables all absences to be quickly investigated to ensure they are genuine and known about by parents
  • It is vastly improving ease of contact between school and parent
  • It reduces administration time spent on the telephone and saves on telephone costs.
  • It provides an inexpensive and robust method of contacting all or groups of parents in the event of an emergency or change to the normal school day.
  • Subscription is geared to the number of pupils on roll and includes a bundle of free SMS messages. The result is that we can offer it to schools for approximately £1 per pupil per year; a typical subscription for a secondary school is just £80 per month.
