Another offering in the Romantic Comedy format out at the moment is Zak & Miri Make A Porno. Two lifelong friends, Zak & Miri, are facing major money troubles. They come up with the idea of making a Porno film, after attending a high school reunion, starring themselves and set about advertising for others to take part. Everything is going well until it's the two friends turn on camera when they realise that maybe there's more to their friendship than they thought. This follows the Romantic Comedy Format to the letter and like a lot of Seth Rogens films just isn't funny. In the whole of the film there was one laugh, the rest of the film was so gentle on the comedy it was just not noticeable. This is one of those films that will not be remembered. If you're stuck between a choice of this one and My Best Friends Girl, then there's simply no choice. My Best Friends Girl beats this one hands down. My Best Friends Girl 21st November 2008 As any readers will know, by the film reviews I have done in the past, Romantic Comedies do not rate high on my favourite types of films. However now and again a good one comes along and blows the rest of them away. My Best Friends Girl has just done exactly that. It has the normal sickly type of format that all Romantic Comedies have except this one is funny. Tank is extremely good at annoying people and finds that he can earn money by dating girls who have recently gotten fed up with their wayward boyfriends. Tank then gives the girl such a bad time, out on a date, that they go back to their dumped boyfriends thinking they're not that bad after all. This is all going swimmingley well until his best mate asks him to help. Unfortunately things don't quite go to plan and Tank soon finds he has to choose between his best mate and his new found feelings for his best mates girl. If you want a good laugh with not too much Lovey Dovey stuff then go and see this one. Max Payne 21st November 2008 Mark Wahlberg is Max Payne, a maverick cop drawn into a dark underworld in the search for his wifes killers. With a mixture of psychotic junkies and drug induced devils Max finds himself framed for murder in this well, put together, conspiracy plot. Plenty of action and a good story make this a good film but there is something lacking. There's this big build up to this film coming out and then....well nothing. I'm not able to pinpoint exactly what is wrong but maybe a little more could have been done with the storyline. The film is still worth seeing as long as you don't expect anything too exciting. The ending leaves plenty of scope for a sequel and, if that happens, it could be one of those rare opportunities where the sequel is better than the first. Let's wait and see...... Pride & Glory 19th November 2008
Collin Farrrel & Jon Voight star in this well paced film about corruption in the New York Police Force. With just the right amount of action and a well written story, go and see this one before you go and see the Bond film. Ghost Town 19th November 2008 Ricky Gervais plays Bertram Pincus, a Dentist that has a major problem with people - He just doesn't like them. After dying for several minutes during a routine operation he suddenly finds that he can see and communicate with the dead. What follows is a gentle comedy that shows him the need of friendship and love.
Don't expect a rip roaring comedy and you won't be disappointed.
Burn After Reading. 16th Noember 2008 This is the Coen Bro's first release since the dreadful "There Will Be Blood" ( which everyone else but me seemed to like).
This time they've gone for the Black Comedy genre and this one IMHO is 200 times better. George Clooney & Brad Pit enjoy themselves and completely ham it up throughout and this is one of the best parts i've seen John Malcovich play. The story is all based around the American Government and a Government File that goes missing which is mistaken by a couple of Blackmailers to be a vital Secret Service Document. Well worth a watch.

Daniel Craig is back as Bond in this follow up to Casino Royale. Now I am a huge Bond film fan and was soooo looking forward to the release of this film. The film does sport lots of action but does not quite make it as a Bond film. The pre-sequence is just another car chase that you see in just about every action film out there. The story is confusing at best and difficult to follow. The story could have been about any agent working for the government. Having said all that, it is still worth seeing, if only, for the action. |
