Woman jailed for assaulting child - 29-08-2008

A woman who assaulted a child has today been jailed for two years and
eight months.

Kerensa Bradburn 35, of Rugby Road, Leigh, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm, cruelty to a person under 16 years of age and perverting the course of justice at an earlier hearing.

She was today, Friday 29 August 2008, sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court.

On 24 September 2007, the child - who was eight months old at the time - was admitted to Wigan Royal Infirmary.

Tests later established the boy had suffered brain and head injuries.

Bradburn was interviewed under caution on 9 October 2007 and denied any
involvement.

During the subsequent police investigation, Bradburn claimed she has also
been assaulted and raped - claims she later admitted were false.

On 28 January 2008, she was charged.

Detective Constable Joanne Kirkman, from Wigan Public Protection
Investigation Unit, said: "Throughout the investigation, Bradburn
repeatedly lied to police until she was forced to own up and admit what
she had done.

"I am pleased that justice has now been done."
