Cyclist injured in collision - 27-08-2008

A cyclist has suffered serious injuries following a road traffic collision
in Leigh.

Shortly after 2.20pm on Tuesday 26 August 2008, police were called to St
Helens Road, Leigh, following reports a man riding a tricycle was in
collision with a Ford Escort.

Officers attended and discovered a man, believed to be in his 60s, with
serious head injuries and a broken leg. He has been taken to hospital
where he remains in a critical condition.

St Helens Road has been closed in both directions between Chestnut Drive
and Bonnywell Road.

Motorists are being advised to take an alternative route where possible.

Police Sergeant Garry Lyle from the Road Policing Unit said: "This is a
very nasty collision and has left the cyclist with serious injuries.

"We have spoken to a number of motorists, including the driver, but I am
appealing for anyone else that may have been in the area at the time and
specifically anyone that may have witnessed the collision to come
forward."

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Road Policing Unit on
0161 856 7201.
