Get fit by Dancing - Tuesday 4th November

A PIONEERING scheme is encouraging adults with learning disabilities to get fit by hitting the dance floor.

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust's Active Living Team has organised a series of club nights through its "Let's Get Active" project to increase confidence and fitness for people with learning disabilities.

On Tuesday more than 120 adults, families and carers danced the night away at Reflex Nightclub in King Street, Wigan.

The project is designed to encourage people to take regular exercise and reduce the risk of heart disease, help weight loss and at the same time increase self-esteem, confidence and social interaction.

Emma Moran, Community Learning Disabilities Officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust said: "Dancing is a really good form of exercise.

"We wanted to create an atmosphere where people with learning disabilities feel comfortable, safe and relaxed so that they have a good time and increase their fitness.

"Combining exercise and fun is a great way to help people reap the health benefits of physical activity."

The ‘Respect Reflex' nights are now set to become a permanent fixture on the club scene.

Organisers have already planned two future dates for Tuesday 4 November and Tuesday 2 December.

The "Let's Get Active" project, funded by Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust, is part of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust's Active Living Team which supports people in becoming more physically active to help improve their health and quality of life.

They also provide targeted physical activity and health programmes for sedentary and older adults, those with chronic health needs, under 5s (and parents and carers), employees and targeted communities.

Admission is by ticket only which must be purchased in advance by contacting, Emma Moran, Karen Hall or Chris Megarrell on (01942) 828 572.
