The biggest annual motorcycle safety event will kick start in London this year, hosted by the Met Police. BikeSafe, which will showcase safety and the spectacular, will take place at the Metropolitan Police Training School (Peel Centre), in Hendon, on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 March 2008 from 10am to 5pm. Entry and parking is free. The event - part of the BikeSafe initiative run by UK constabularies to promote better biking and improve the safety of motorcyclists on the roads - will feature lots of activities and promises fun for all the family. These include free rider skill assessments, or 'ride-outs', trying out bikes supplied by leading manufacturers, scooter try-outs and a number of police displays by the Met dog, horse and helicopter support units. There will be a number of entertaining and informative displays for everyone to enjoy including The Royal Signals White Helmets Motorcycle Display Team, Air Raid FMX Stunt Team, Met Police Driving School Skid Pan demonstrations. Following the event's safety theme, a joint emergency service 'road collision extraction' demonstration will simulate a collision and educate people the work of emergency services in these circumstances. Some of the many exhibitors present will include owners' clubs, classic bikes, manufacturers, dealers, and clothing and accessory suppliers. Food and drink will also be available. Chief Inspector Dave McLaren from the Traffic Unit said: "This year's National BikeSafe Event promises to be interesting and exciting for both experienced and new bikers, with plenty of entertainment for their families too. So come along and enjoy what's on offer!"
Many leading motorcycle manufacturers will be there to promote their products and provide bikes for free ride-outs, where individual riders will be given a tips on riding by an experienced police motorcyclist. In fact, 79 traffic officers from constabularies across the country will help out across the weekend. So whether you want to be assessed on your own machine or the model of bike you always wanted to own, there will be a police officer ready to see how you do. (You will need a license for this provisional or full - please make sure you bring your driving licence - card and counterpart). In addition to manufacturers, there will be local motorcycle dealers, training providers, government and road safety organisations, as well as rider support groups present. Everyone who comes along to the event each day will automatically enter the free prize draw to win a host of biking prizes, including the top prizes a Kawasaki Ninja 250R or a Kawasaki ER6n- one of these bikes will be given away on each day over the weekend of the event. The National BikeSafe Event enables police forces across the country to promote BikeSafe, a scheme aimed at reducing bike collisions and rider casualties. The event also allows members of the public to assess their skills and try out various bikes in a safe environment, with specialist police officers on hand for advice. The National Bikesafe Event began in 2002 when West Mercia Constabulary first hosted it. Since then it has grown over time with more people attending each year. |
