YOUNG people wishing to pursue political office are being invited to attend three workshops, taking place at Birmingham Central Library over the next three months. Between October and December young people interested in becoming UK Youth Parliament 2009 election candidates, can attend the following sessions; § Introduction to the UKYP - 18 October 2008 - 10.00am to 12.00pm § So you want to stand for election - 13 November 2008 - 4.30pm to 6.30pm § Your campaign - 13 December 2008 - 10.00am to 12.00pm The meetings have been organised by Birmingham City Council's Youth Service, and will outline how to stand for election and what is expected of those who win seats. In total there are five UKYP seats open to young people living or studying within the city, and those who stand must be aged between 11 and 18 to take part. Past MYPs have carried out a varied range of duties, including meeting government ministers in London, attending summer residential camps and even playing an active role on some of Birmingham City Council's committees. Cllr Les Lawrence, Cabinet Member for Children Young People and Families, said: "The UK Youth Parliament is an ideal opportunity for Birmingham's young people to become part of democracy in action and make their views known - enabling positive changes to be made in the process. "I would urge as many young people as possible to get involved with this election campaign because those who have taken part in the past have gained a great deal from the experience, as well as proving that the city has an emerging generation that cares about important issues." Following the meetings, a period of campaigning will then take place before voting, set to occur online between January 26 and February 11 2009. Results are then due to be declared for towns and cities across the region on February 13, 2009.
