Princess Royal to open pioneering Birmingham care centre - 03-09-2008
|
The Princess Royal is to officially open Birmingham City Council's pioneering Perry Tree care centre on 9 October.
Her Royal Highness will meet residents, local community users and staff at the centre in Perry Common in the Erdington constituency - one of the first four state-of-the-art centres to open across the city as part of the council's modernisation of adult care.
Councillor Sue Anderson, Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities, said: "I will be delighted to welcome the Princess Royal to Birmingham and to our wonderful new care centre. I am sure she will be impressed by the huge range of facilities provided, from community facilities to residential care, with a particular focus on people with dementia.
"We will be showing the Princess Royal how the city council is at the forefront of developing and improving services, at the heart of the community, to allow people to remain independent for as long as possible."
The centres will be at the heart of their communities, providing a drop-in resource centre and an assistive technology shop which will offer advice and information to older people and their carers. Each centre will have a Community Links Service. The care centres will have 64 en-suite bedrooms, some of which will be long-term care beds. The centres will also feature assistive technology, rehabilitation services, a gym and therapy rooms. The design of the centres, from the bedrooms to the gardens, is specifically aimed at people with dementia.
The Princess Royal will be given a tour of the centre and meet Councillor Anderson, Strategic Director of Adults and Communities Peter Hay, centre manager Mike White and staff, residents and community service users.
