Birmingham's world-famous Frankfurt Christmas Market will return to the city for an eighth consecutive year this November, with more than two million visitors expected to enjoy the festive fun during its six-week run. Details of this years' yuletide extravaganza, which is the largest authentic German market held anywhere in the world outside Germany and Austria, were officially unveiled by officials at Birmingham City Council today. Running from 13th November to 23rd December the market, which will be staged in Victoria Square and New Street, will feature traditional stalls offering handmade toys, Christmas decorations, jewellery, clothing and craft goods. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the delights of German mulled wine (Glühwein), grilled sausages, pretzels, German beer, gingerbread, stollen, crepes and marzipan sweets. A giant helter-skelter and carousel will keep children entertained while live music and carols will be performed every lunchtime and evening from a bandstand in Victoria Square. Towards the end of the year the German Market will also be joined by the returning homegrown craft market in Centenary Square, bringing the total number of stalls on offer to over 120. Throughout the course of the event a series of special events will be held, allowing even more visitors to enjoy the fun. These will begin on Saturday 15th November with a ‘Family Day' offering free activities and special offers for children. Further special events will be held on Saturday 6th December to mark ‘St Nikolaus Day', the highlight of Advent in Germany, while the ever popular open-air ‘Carols in the City' returns on Saturday 13th December. The market, which will run from 13th November - 23rd December, open 10.00am - 9.00pm daily. For more information go to: www.birmingham.gov.uk/frankfurtmarket. |
