Event: A free Lunchtime Talk including illustrationsTues 13 May, 1pm to 2pm, Library Theatre, Paradise Forum, Bham City Centre
A series of lunchtime local history lectures at the Library Theatre is proving a huge success! An illustrated talk from 1.00pm - 2.00pm, on the second Tuesday of each month, is free of charge and people can just turn up on the day, no need to book.This month's lecture on Tuesday 13th is by John Smith and is called "Memories of Birmingham Theatres". John is well-known to local historians, also to allied societies and people with an interest in musicals and light opera. Patrick Baird, Head of Public Service - Archives & Heritage and Birmingham Central Library, said; "We are all really pleased with the success of these lunchtime lectures at the Library Theatre. Last month we had a full house at the venue. This Tuesday, John Smith will be talking about musical shows performed in Birmingham theatres prior to the Second World War. This talk will include musical extracts guaranteed to ignite a spirit of nostalgia and delight. The "Hipp" and the "Alex" are of course well known to theatregoers today. However, I am sure John will also talk about venues no longer with us, such as the Theatre Royal in New Street and the Prince of Wales on Broad Street."
"The series of talks cover a wide range of topics about the history and development of Birmingham also biographies of the great and the good; politicians, scientists, entertainers and other interesting characters who were born, educated or made Birmingham their home and range from the serious educational side of the subject to the weird and wacky and entertaining." These lunchtime events are organised by the Archives & Heritage Service of the Central Library, in conjunction with the Birmingham and District Local History Association. |
