Support Your Local Playwright

No – not Shakespeare! SCURC Dramatic Society are presenting two nights of entertainment devoted to local playwrights and artists on 22nd and 23rd May in the Cedar Hall.

Drama is provided by 3 short plays specially written by the U3A Creative Writing Group. For playwrights Trevor Smith, Chris Madeley, and Andrew Hackett it is an exciting time as their debut plays all make it on to the stage. All three plays have a musical inspiration and will be introduced by the authors.

Trevor Smith has penned “We’ll Meet Again”. Set in a Scout’s reunion the play has moments of comedy and pathos a plenty as business rivals prove that the scouting bond is lifelong and overcomes bitter resentment.

Chris Madeley has produced witty short piece entitled Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. The angst of teenage love and heartbreak is helped back on the path to true love and lifelong happiness by little essence of Ethiopian Sheep’s hoof from a trendy market stall…but are those 2 nice ladies who run the stall quite what they seem to be?

Andrew Hackett’s first play, “Leaving on a Jet Plane”, is witty and well observed drama set in an airport lounge as two couples set off on holiday together. Bang up to date with T5 as its back-drop we watch the drama unfold as their plane is delayed and secrets are slowly revealed.

The play’s the thing but there is much more to this evening. In support of these local playwrights we also plan to have an exhibition of local amateur art and photography. If that’s not enough we round the evening off with a fish & chip supper and quiz with a Sutton theme.
