Emma reads her way to London - 18-07-2008

A DARLINGTON woman is on her way to London after winning a national reading competition.

Emma Lowther has won a VIP trip to London for herself and a guest including tickets to a West End show and £150 spending money after taking part in the Six Book Challenge with Stockton Library Service.

Emma, who has Dyslexia and attends Adult Education classes at Kiora Hall in Roseworth, was one of 31 learners from the Borough to take part in the challenge to read six books in six months.

"I enjoy going to Roseworth Library and I have enjoyed reading and talking about the Quick Reads in class," said Emma. "I am on cloud nine, it hasn't sunk in yet - I can't believe it's happening to me."

Councillor Mary Womphrey, Stockton Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: "Reading is one of the most rewarding activities anyone can do. I whole heartedly congratulate Emma on overcoming her difficulties to not only complete the challenge but also to win this great prize."

The Six Book Challenge is a national programme organised by the Reading Agency in association with Costa Books where Skills for Life learners read six books of their choice between January and June before writing their thoughts in a reading diary.

The competition in Stockton was organised and run by Stockton Borough Council's Library Service and Adult Education which ran two reading groups in Stockton Central Library encouraging learners to read and enjoy books. Both groups will continue to meet now the challenge has finished.
