YOUNGSTERS and Stockton Borough Council's Road Safety Team are joining forces this week to raise awareness of the consequences of ignoring School Crossing Patrollers. On Tuesday July 1, pupils from Ingleby Mill Primary School and the Road Safety Team will meet at Windmill Way to launch a full size advert on the back of a bus showing the consequences of ignoring a Crossing Patroller. Crossing Patrollers provide a vital service to people across the Borough helping children to safely cross the road while going to and from school. Yet some drivers think it is okay to abuse, intimidate or even drive around Patrollers in the road displaying their "Stop!" sign. It is a criminal offence to fail to stop for a Crossing Patroller, and any motorist doing so could receive a minimum three points on their license, £4,000 fine or even disqualification. Councillor Steve Nelson, Stockton Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, said: "It is unbelievable some inconsiderate motorists think it is acceptable to intimidate, ignore and even drive at Crossing Patrollers who are helping to keep the children of the Borough safe while crossing roads. "Stockton Council will always report to the Police any motorist who fails to stop or is abusive to Patrollers and hopefully this advert will make drivers think twice when they next see a patroller." http://www.stockton.gov.uk/pressoffice/ |
