LEARN ABOUT LOCAL DEMOCRACY

 

YOUNG people can learn all about the workings of democracy and Stockton
Borough Council this month with the return of an annual event.

 

Local Democracy Week, a national campaign taking place from October 13
-17, raises young people's awareness of how local government works and
the Council's Democratic Services is holding events throughout the month
showing people of all ages how they can get involved in local democracy.

 

The team is holding a series of free workshops and activities for people
across the Borough including:

 

*        Young people will attend an Environmental Select Committee on
Monday, October 13 and a Planning Committee meeting on Wednesday,
October 15 to learn how the Council makes decisions

 

*        Tours of Stockton Town Hall between 10am - 12noon on Wednesday,
October 15 giving people the chance to learn many interesting facts
about the building and the Borough

 

*        Year 7 pupils from Grangefield School will take part in two fun
Democracy workshops on Thursday, October 16

 

Councillor Terry Laing, Stockton Borough Council's Cabinet Member for
Corporate Management and Finance, said: "Council decisions affect every
part of our lives from keeping our parks and streets clean to what times
the local pubs are allowed to open.

 

"Local Democracy Week will show just how these decisions are made and
how anyone can take part in making decisions for the Borough."
