WYNYARD Planetarium is inviting people to discover "What's Up?" this autumn with a range of public shows. "What's Up?", on Friday, September 5 will keep visitors up-to-date on which stars, planets and other objects such as comets, shooting stars and eclipses are visible in the night sky for the coming month.Visitors can also boggle their minds with the "Powers of Ten: Size of the Universe" public show on Friday September 19.
The show, a taster for the International Year of Astronomy 2009, celebrates the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of the telescope. It talks about the size of the universe in an easy-to-understand way showing how big the universe really is, and how small we are in comparison.
There are also regular public observing events on Fridays, September 5, 12,19 and 26 at 9pm as well as the meeting of Cleveland and Darlington Astronomical Society on Friday, September 12 at 7.15pm. The Planetarium's Telescope Club will also meet on Friday, September 26 at 7.30pm. Councillor Mary Womphrey, Stockton Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said:
"In this modern age, light pollution can spoil the view of the night sky so the Wynyard Planetarium is a great way to enjoy the stars as they should be seen.
"All public planetarium shows take place at 7.30pm and last for one and a half-hours costing £3.50 for adults, £2 concessions and £7 for a family ticket. Public observing events are free however will only take place if the sky is clear. An adult must accompany children aged 16 and under to all events and public shows are only suitable for children over 6.
