Olympic Flag Raising - Sunday, August 24 at 2:30pm.

STOCKTON will celebrate the handover of the Olympics in style with the official raising of the Olympic flag on Sunday, August 24 at 2:30pm. The flag handover marks the end of the Beijing Games and the start of the countdown to the 2012 London Games.

Councillor Ken Lupton, Leader of Stockton Council, and local gymnast Craig Heap will raise the flag at the White Water course at the Tees Barrage. Craig competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and was twice gold medallist in the Commonwealth Games.

Councillor Ken Lupton said: "The White Water course will be a training ground for the London games so it's a perfect place for Stockton to celebrate the Olympic handover. The Great British team has had tremendous success at the Beijing Olympics and I'm sure training venues like the White Water course will help competitors in their preparation for 2012."

Alan Slater, British Waterways River Manager, said: "British Waterways is delighted the Teesside White Water Course has been chosen as a pre-games training camp, working alongside the other excellent facilities the North-East has to offer."We are hopeful of attracting one of the major sporting countries to take up residence with us. We're also planning major modifications to the canoe course, allowing it to be operated at any time and become the world's first fully sustainable canoe course which generates its own power to pump the water round the circuit."

The raising of the flag signifies the beginning of the United Kingdom's tenure of the Olympic Games. The Games will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to inspire people of all ages and all backgrounds, an opportunity which will be felt across the land.

Stockton Borough Council will be working hard to ensure this area makes the very most of the social and economic benefits the 2012 games will bring to the Borough and its residents.
