Veteran triathlete Roger Godley from Ingleby Barwick, who has competed in the world triathlon championships for Great Britain, is getting ready for a similar triple challenge event on his doorstep with the Stockton Triathlon.
Roger, 46, who runs a family bike business in Great Ayton, Bike Traks, has been training hard for the 1500 m swim, 40k bike ride and 10k run which will take place around the Tees Barrage on Monday, 25 August.
He is looking forward to entering the triathlon on his home territory and hopes to finish in the top five in a time of around two hours.
Roger said: "The course is one of the best in the North East. It is very scenic and yet challenging at the same time.
The bike section is a very technical course which will be testing for the competitors and the swim is good although I hope the water warms up a bit by late August!" Organised by Stockton Borough Council and events company MIG, the triathlon includes running sections around the picturesque network of paths beside the River Tees, finishing along its banks. The majority of the land and water-based courses are relatively flat, which should lead to some super-fast performances from the elite contenders.
Councillor Ken Lupton, Leader of Stockton Council and Cabinet Member for Sports Development, said: "Good luck to Roger and all of the other entrants. The Stockton Triathlon is a gruelling challenge but one I'm sure the triathletes will relish.
We've worked hard to make huge improvements to the River and the surrounding area and the triathlon is a great way to let people see the changing face of out town."
Alan Slater, British Waterways' river manager for the Tees Barrage said: "The transformation of the riverside here at the Tees Barrage, mixed with the top quality facilities we have, make this a perfect venue for an event like the Stockton Triathlon." This is a spectacular place to be and an increasing amount of people are visiting the barrage to enjoy what we have on offer.
With the action packed events we've already hosted so far this year such as the Jet Ski Championships, and with plans to hold more events like this in the future, it's an exciting time here at the Tees."
