Gardening for Africa - Throughout June and July,

Gardening for Africa
YOUNGSTERS across Stockton Borough will be getting green fingered as they learn how to grow their own vegetables using African style techniques. Throughout June and July, Preston Hall Museum is visiting more than 15 local schools, getting children to grow their own vegetables and Museum staff have also been teaching children about healthy eating and global issues. The project has been developed as a result of the recent reopening of Preston Hall Museum's Victorian Winter Garden. Through the support from the Heritage Lottery Fund the Museum has joined forces with the charity 'Send a Cow' to go out into the community, creating a new generation of gardeners. By building a simple bag garden from a hessian sack children can make food links and appreciate growing and eating their own produce - just like many children in Africa.Councillor Mary Womphrey, Stockton Council's Cabinet member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for youngsters to learn about gardening and how things are done in Africa. This project has really captured the imagination of children within the area and over the next month there will be almost 1,000 children enjoying creating their African Garden."
