Tri the Stockton Triathlon - Sunday, July 13,
|
PEOPLE in Teesside are being challenged to slip on their running shoes, swimming gear and get on their bike for the Stockton Triathlon. Held on Sunday, July 13, the Triathlon challenges athletes in the water, on wheels and on foot as they tackle the standard distance - 1,500m swim, 40km cycle ride and 10km run. There is also a sprint triathlon of 750m swim, 20km cycle ride and 5km run. Both the Standard and Sprint triathlons can be entered by individuals or teams. The event is based around the Tees Barrage with the swim being carried out in the clean waters of the River Tees and the bike and running race held along its banks. The Barrage, owned and operated by British Waterways, will be a training camp for the 2012 Olympics and has staged many successful international standard events including the World Championship bell boat racing, water skiing and canoeing. The Triathlon will reinforce its reputation as a top quality venue and provides an opportunity for competitors and spectators to see the remarkable transformation of the riverside area. Councillor Mary Womphrey, Stockton Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Arts, Culture and Leisure, said: "The Triathlon is a great challenge and the event organisers assure me anyone of reasonable fitness will be able to take part."As well as being a great sporting opportunity, it's a great chance to show off the amazing regeneration work of the riverside area. The River Tees looks spectacular and I'm sure the competitors and spectators will have a wonderful time in Stockton." The swimming event will be held upstream of the Tees Barrage with lifeguards present to ensure swimmers' safety. Please note: Swimming in any stretch of river without permission and full safety measures can be extremely dangerous. The running and cycling legs of the event will take place on specially cordoned off routes between Stockton and Middlesbrough making the most of the spectacular riverside setting and taking in future development sites along the banks of the River Tees. The route will require some roads to be temporarily closed and well signed full traffic diversions will be in place on the day.
