THE new state-of-the-art play area in John Whitehead Park in Billingham is going down a treat with children.
On some days during the half term holidays, literally hundreds of children are using the fantastic equipment there.
The 750 square metres of the area includes superb equipment including a multi-activity tree house, a three legged bell climber, climbing nets, a cable ride, a playhouse with slide, a spinning rotator, a large basket swing, a dish roundabout, stepping pods, a spring see-saw as well as some traditional cradle swings.
There's also some features incorporated in to the landscape, such as the Stainless Steel Hemispheres, an underground tunnel, several natural rock features along with a number of tree/tree stumps. A number of grass mounds are also incorporated in to the overall design. New seating and fencing is proposed.
A mix of surfacing helps to keep the children safe ranging from the rubber impact absorbing type with graphics incorporated in to it, as well as the wood play chip surfacing on three of the large pieces of equipment along with grass mat surfacing on the cable ride, giving the appearance the surface is grass and conforms to the latest European standards for play.
Councillor Mary Womphrey, Stockton Council's Cabinet Member for Arts, Culture and Leisure, said:
"It's clear the children are really enjoying using the equipment at John Whitehead Park and it's wonderful for them to be out in the fresh air rather than being stuck indoors."
