New dance company will sow the seeds for another spectacular Community Carnival - 30 July to 3 August.

 
PEOPLE with a flair for dance are being invited to help sow the seeds of this year's Stockton Community Carnival at the Stockton International Riverside Festival (SIRF).

Stockton Council's Arts Development team is working in partnership with London-based Carnival company Kinetika and other local authorities across Tees Valley to develop a new carnival dance company which will help animate this year's carnival parade.

Stockton Council is calling on people aged 14 and over to join the new dance company, Carnival Crew Tees Valley. Selected participants will receive free training in carnival choreography, costumes and travel related expenses. They will help create a flamboyant show for the Community Carnival, as well as touring three Tees Valley festivals this summer and performing at the Thames Festival in London in September.

The carnival forms part of Kinetika's five-year national project called ImagiNation:Our Nation, which begins with the theme of GermiNation. Stockton will use this theme to explore sowing the seeds of innovation in this year's carnival parade.Councillor Mary Womphrey, Cabinet Member for Arts Leisure and Culture, said:

"The Community Carnival is a great way for local groups to have fun and get involved with SIRF and this year local community groups will have the chance to strut their stuff in festivals outside the region."

Carnival Crew Tees Valley should contact Faye Simpson on (01642) 665403 or email fayesimpson@teesvalleydance.co.uk. An informal audition will take place on Sunday, April 20 with rehearsals between then and June.

Carnival Crew Tees Valley will take part in festivals in July and August including the SIRF Community Carnival on Saturday, August 2 as well as one performance in September.
