Crime down 22% across St Albans District - 15-05-2008

St Albans Community Safety Partnership announces its three year crime reduction results.

The hard work of St Albans Community Safety Partnership has now yielded rewards for the residents of the city and district.

Calculated over a three year period to the end of March 2008, St Albans District has seen a 22% reduction in all recorded crime.

Not only that, but in relation specifically to crimes against people and property, the Partnership achieved a 25% reduction against a challenging target of 18.5% set by the Home Office.

  • Theft of vehicle DOWN 44%
  • Theft from vehicle DOWN 44%
  • Domestic Burglary DOWN 25%
  • Robbery of personal property DOWN 24%
  • Theft from Person DOWN 14%
  • Common assault UP 27%
  • Wounding DOWN 20%
  • Criminal damage UP 7%
  • Vehicle interference DOWN 28%
  • Theft of pedal cycle UP27%

St Albans Chief Inspector Partnerships, Sue Wheatley, said "These are excellent results and mean that in the last three years there have been 1,765 fewer crimes and therefore 1,765 fewer victims of crime. The Community Safety Partnership has performed exceptionally well in reducing vehicle crime, burglary and robbery by tackling the small number of persistent offenders who cause the most crime."

In relation to alcohol-related violent crime last year St Albans Community Safety Partnership achieved a reduction of 35% or 244 fewer victims of crime.
St Albans District Council's Chief Executive, Daniel Goodwin, who chairs the Partnership, said "the work undertaken by the Police and the Council's Licensing Team in partnership with the licensing trade resulted in us receiving the Local Authority of the Year Award in the Responsible Drinks Retailing Awards 2007 and reflected work on a number of partnership initiatives to make our city and town centres safer."

Cllr Anthony Rowlands, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement and Support commented: "Hertfordshire is already one of the safest counties in England and St Albans residents should feel reassured that we have one of the top performing Community Safety Partnerships in the county. These encouraging results, showing a reduction in recorded crime, are a tribute to the effective work of our Council's Community Safety team, the local police and a number of other partner organisations. The officers involved deserve our thanks."

The District also has one of the lowest rates of anti-social behaviour in the county due to the proactive work undertaken by the Council's Anti-social Behaviour Unit, working with the Police, the Youth Offending Team and other agencies. Projects such as one-to-one parenting support and youth diversionary schemes such as the St Albans Community Football Project, have all played their part. This has resulted in St Albans city and district being able to deliver in partnership with Watford Football Club, the provision of a number of initiatives for young people across the district which will start next month.

The Partnership has just launched its new three year plan which sets out its priorities for the next three years:-

  • Reducing crime
  • Tackling anti-social behaviour and alcohol related disorder
  • Promoting community safety and reducing the fear of crime

The Partnership wants to create safer neighbourhoods and greater feelings of safety and wants the public to feel that they have a genuine involvement and bigger say in how their neighbourhoods are policed.
