The Mayor Cllr Kate Morris will visit the market in St Albans on the morning of Saturday 26th April, starting at 11am, to take part in a re-enactment of the 14th century ways of ensuring fair measure and sampling medieval fare.
There will be fun, excitement and entertainment such as archery and minstrels playing music. Stalls will feature candles, soap, and display for inspection, real items of the period from the museum.
Starting at 11am in front of Laura Ashley, there will be a trial of anyone found to have been trading and not using fair measures, with the possibility if they're found guilty, of being put into the stocks, (approximately 11.30am to noon).
Starting between 2pm and 2.30pm, The Lord Justiciar (Lord Chief Justice) will try the local leader, William Grindcobbe and other Albanians, in the Abbey Gateway for their role in the Peasants' Revolt of 1381.
There will be explanatory hand outs provided at the event.
This is the fifth event which is part of the mayor's series of charity fundraising events under the theme, PRESENTING OUR PAST, For The Future. Drawing on the diverse history of the district, she is hosting a number of events to reveal aspects of our past. Each event will be accompanied by a historical leaflet. A commemorative folder has been produced, in which to keep the leaflets for all the events. These can be bought afterwards from the Tourist and Information Centre and both museums for £1 each, so that a complete history can be collected over the year. All proceeds from spectacles, ransoms and sustenance will go to the St Albans Fund for the Future.
