Following concerns from local residents Normandy Way in Marchwood is to be resurfaced and the mini roundabout modified to reduce the noise generated from lorries accessing the industrial estate. Hampshire County Council engineers checked out the road surface along Normandy Way after residents living nearby reported concerns about high levels of noise from lorries accessing the Marchwood Industrial Estate. The engineers' findings showed that the regularity of the surface is not ideal for the type of trailer mounted lorries using the road and as a result the County Council will be carrying out resurfacing works on Normandy Way and enhancing the roundabout to the industrial estate. In addition signing will be placed on Cracknore Hard Lane to help prevent lorries taking the wrong turning into the residential estate. The works will be undertaken early in the new year subject to satisfactory weather conditions. There will be a need for diversionary routing of the traffic and some unavoidable disruption but every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum. Cllr Kendal the Executive Member for the Environment has said "The resurfacing works are a direct consequence of us listening and responding to the local community and listening to their concerns. The new surface will hopefully improve the situation for residents who have been suffering from significantly increased lorry movements into the Industrial Estate in recent years, but these measures will not completely eliminate traffic noise." The County Council and New Forest District Council are to raise the need for the Government to widen the Traffic Commissioner's consideration of Goods Vehicle operating licence requests to take account, not only of the physical suitability of the road access but also the cumulative impact such use would have on nearby local communities. To ignore this impact is clearly unsatisfactory. For more information visit Hampshire County Council |
