Libraries Launch National Festival Fortnight: 18th October - 1 November 2008 ‘Do Something Different' at your local library this month - there's something for everyone during a special fortnight of fun activities. From Saturday, October 18, to November 1, Hampshire County Council Library Service is showcasing the fantastic range of library events on offer as part of the national ‘Do Something Different' fortnight. From the very young, Baby Rhymetime and Storytime for toddlers, to the more mature library user who may appreciate a course in quilting or photography, the event is packed with inspirational ideas. Computer classes, cartoon drawing, French, healthy eating, music technology and Caribbean storytelling are just a taste of the diverse range available throughout the county. There's a chance to wax lyrical with a poetry competition based on entries inspired by walks in the beautiful north Hampshire countryside. The Words ‘n' Walks event, at Kingsclere, Overton and Whitchurch libraries, is open to all ages. Winning entries will be chosen by Alison Orlowska, Hampshire Poet for the National Year of Reading, and will be displayed on fingerposts along the walks. The fortnight is part of the National Year of Reading and coincides with the school half term break. It aims to encourage more children, teenagers, their parents - and grandparents - to join their local library and discover the range of activities and classes on offer. Executive Member for Recreation and Heritage, Councillor Margaret Snaith said: "The ‘Do Something Different' Fortnight is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to pop along to their local library, find out what events are being held and sign up to a new class or activity. Hampshire County Council libraries are determined to provide the best possible service for all users and I'm sure there is something exciting on offer for everybody." Honor Wilson-Fletcher, Project Director of the National Year of Reading said: "‘We didn't know they did that!' is a frequent comment we get when we tell people about the huge range of activities going on in libraries today. Of course libraries provide access to great reads of every kind for free, but there's so much more on offer. This festival is for everyone so make sure you're not wailing "I can't believe I missed that!" Libraries are brimming with ideas, events and activities based around reading and learning this half term. Join your library today!" For more information visit Hampshire County council |
