Hampshire County Council is launching a children's poetry competition on National Poetry Day (October 9), as part of the National Year of Reading to make writing exciting. Winners will be given £50 worth of books and £500 worth of books for their school, if the school encouraged them to enter. Children aged between four and 16 are being asked to write a poem on the theme of books and reading. The poem could be about a passion for reading or maybe a favourite book, author or character; in fact, any topic that celebrates books and reading. Executive Member for Recreation, Heritage and Communities, Councillor Margaret Snaith, said: "This is a great way to get children of all ages writing poetry in this, the National Year of Reading. Children are allowed to submit up to three poems so they can really get involved in exploring different styles of poetry to best express their subject. I would like to wish everyone the best of luck with their entry." All you have to do to enter is go onto the Internet and go to www3.hants.gov.uk/year-of-reading/poetry-competition , complete the form and attach the poem. Poems should be no longer than 25 lines and all entries should be in English, original and unpublished. There are three categories: infant, junior and secondary and entrants may submit up to three poems. The closing date is Friday 21 November. The winning entrant's school will be able to choose their own selection of books from the School Library Service Bookshop in Winchester. For more information visit Hampshire County Council |
