Unsung champions do exist. One Tenant Hero, Carl Collins was recognised at the recent annual Tenants Conference organised by Southampton City Council. The Tenant Hero Award is Southampton City Council initiative to inspire more folk to become champions in their community. Cllr Phil Williams Cabinet Member for Housing and Local Services presented a certificate to Carl Collins, a cheque for £200 towards a community project and a fifty pound £50 voucher. Carl inspirational work on the Northam included fun events for kids; he built all the props - including a steam train! He also helps run the fruit and veg co op and provides a lot of handyman work around the estate. All together there were six nominations for Tenant Hero, the five other nominees and their inspirational work: John Payne - the driving force behind block improvement and cleanliness Diane Coulson - shops and cooks for her neighbours Jim Tupppenney - looks after communal gardens and provides entertainment Tony Crute - keeps checks on his neighbours, cooks and shops for them Freddie Potter - getting kids off the streets by teaching them boxing Unfortunately, Freddie died before he could receive his award. Nick Murphy Executive Director for Neighbourhoods said; "It is the generosity of spirit from local people such as Freddie Potter, Carl Collins and our other nominees that makes good communities." Each of the runners-up received a £20 voucher and a certificate. Two of the runners up were unable to attend but Diane Coulson and John Payne were presented with their award by Cllr Phil Williams. Cllr Phil Willams said; "The Tenant Hero Award is a testament to good community and good neighbours, I am proud that the city recognises the valiant efforts of all the unsung heroes in our communities, that work tirelessly to improve the lives of others - they are an example to us all."
