Southampton City Council's Cabinet has approved expenditure of the first £150,000 of funding to support the final phase of work on Tudor House Museum. The money is in addition to the £1.5m approved by full council earlier this month. Phase two of the project aims to develop the building into a popular visitor attraction. This includes the provision of new services and visitor facilities within the building including new displays and experiences which will tell the story of the house and the people who lived and worked there. The new attraction is intended to attract both local residents and visitors alike. The new museum also incorporates a café and a brand new education suite located in Tudor Merchant's Hall. Cabinet has also agreed for officers to submit the Stage two Heritage Lottery application refurbishment. The council funding allows work to continue while the submission is assessed. The news comes after a series of successful open days which allowed members of the public a sneak preview of how the improvements are going along with guided tours. Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Heritage, Councillor Hannides said, "Tudor House is a fine example of Southampton's treasure chest and is such a historically important landmark. I'm delighted we have been able to secure the continuation of improvements. Our aim is to enhance and build on Southampton's cultural credentials so that we can improve attractions such as Tudor House and bring Southampton's heritage alive for everyone." Earlier this month Southampton City Council unveiled its vision for arts and heritage - entitled Towards an International City of Culture - placing people and culture at the heart of the city and connecting existing arts and heritage initiatives. The report, which is the result of extensive consultation with stakeholders and residents, highlights the importance of the arts and their contribution to a rich cultural life. Making the most of the city's rich arts and heritage assets, such as Tudor House, will help the route towards Southampton becoming an international city of culture by 2026.
