Police investigating the death of a cyclist on the Itchen Bridge in Southampton are re-appealing for witnesses, a week since the collision. 60-year-old Derek Witt from Swanwick died on Wednesday, August 20, when the bicycle he was riding was in collision with a dark coloured Peugeot 406. Another rider, a 32-year-old man from Whiteley, suffered serious leg and chest injuries. He remains in a serious but stable condition at Southampton General Hospital. On Wednesday, August 27, 10 officers from Hampshire Constabulary's Roads Policing Unit and Southampton Operational Command Unit carried out a road check on the bridge. Between 7.30 and 9.30pm they stopped 793 vehicles and others using the bridge to ask if anyone saw or heard anything that might relate to the incident. As a result, officers are now able to follow up a number of potential witnesses. Inspector Darren Miller from the Totton Roads Policing Unit said: "I would like to thank everyone who stopped to assist us with our enquiries. "We carried out the targeted road check a week on from the collision in the hope of speaking to people who may have been in the area at the time it happened. "I'm still very keen to talk to a man we understand to be a soldier who stopped and offered help at the scene at the time and who may have witnessed the incident."
