Officers from the force's Roads Policing Unit and Southampton Safer Neighbourhoods Team will be entering into the spirit of Southampton's 6th Mela Festival this weekend. A team from the Totton Roads Policing Unit (RPU) will be pitching up at the event in Hoglands Park on Saturday (July 19) to promote safe, responsible driving and give festival-goers an insight into the work of the RPU. Those visiting the police stand will get the chance to speak to specialist officers about any road safety issues or concerns they may have, as well view some of the latest equipment used by the RPU in an interactive display. Officers from the Safer Neighbourhoods Team for Southampton City Centre will also be attending, along with the Constabulary's Recruiting Department and Special Branch. Southampton Central Chief Inspector, Alison Scott, said: "We are very pleased to be one of the main sponsors for this year's Mela event in the city. "The festival is expected to attract around 20,000 people and we're looking forward to being part of that. I'd encourage people to come along and find out more about what we do." The free event, which is organised by Art Asia, celebrates modern and traditional south Asian culture and runs from 12pm to 9pm. Other attractions include live music, workshops, dance demonstrations, arts and crafts and a funfair. Totton RPU Chief Inspector, Steve Jefford, said: "The Mela festival is a great opportunity for us to speak to Southampton residents, give them an insight into what we do and also listen to their concerns. "Southampton's roads are patrolled by officers from Totton RPU on a daily basis and we work in partnership with our colleagues from stations across the city to keep Southampton safe.
