A pioneer of the Southampton Boat Show and a school crossing patrol stalwart are to be honoured by the Right Worshipful Mayor of Southampton today, Wednesday 14th May. Every year the City of Southampton Award is presented to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the city. This year, presentations will be made to Norman Kemish, who helped mastermind the first boat show nearly 40 years ago, and Anne Newell, who has been helping Portswood Primary pupils get to school for 25 years. The awards will be made at Southampton Guildhall as part of the annual Mayor Making ceremony. This year, the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Stephen Barnes-Andrews, will pass on his robes to the Mayor elect, Councillor Brian Parnell, who has been serving at Sheriff since last May. Mr Kemish was born in the Freemantle district of Southampton and has lived and worked in Southampton all of his life. Mr Kemish and Mr Arthur Gale conceived the idea of organising a local boat show and in 1969 the first Southampton Boat Show was arranged. Mr Kemish had a hand in organising the boat show for over 15 years until it was handed over to the London Boat Show organisers. It has now grown from those very small beginnings to the success it is today. Mrs Newell has been a school crossing patrol officer at the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue and Welbeck Avenue for a quarter of a century. Many people came forward to nominate Anne for her cheerful and pleasant nature and her commitment and care to the children attending Portswood Primary. She gives many children the confidence, once they were old enough, to go to school independently with their parents being assured of their safety in their journey to and from school. Mayor Making begins at 11am on Wednesday and the City of Southampton Awards will be made at approximately 11.50am. The Territorial Army will also be receiving Freedom of the City. Ends
