FOREST FORGE THEATRE COMPANY AGE CONCERN SOUTHAMPTON & THE NUFFIELD THEATRE SOUTHAMPTON
proudly present a co-production of...
Nayee Kahani
For the second time in twelve months female members of the Suhana Centre, a drop-in centre for Asian Elders run by Age Concern Southampton, will take to the stage at The Nuffield Theatre. Last year, under the direction of Lisa Halpin from Forest Forge Theatre Company, the group devised and performed their own play at the Temple in Radcliffe Road. This year, they have joined forces with The Nuffield Theatre, and the women will be performing their new play Nayee Kahani (which translates as New Story) there this summer. The performance will be in Hindi, with an English summary in the programme.
"I am really pleased to say that along with the women that took part in last years' production we have been joined by new members" said Lisa Halpin, Community Drama Officer. "The group are aged between 65 and 87 years young, and over the last ten weeks I have worked with them to create and perform a play about things that are important to them. The issue that they have chosen to explore this year is ‘mixed marriages', and Nayee Kahani is a gentle look at one family's experience of welcoming a new member into their family."
Mrs Manek, one of the group members, said "We feel that it's a really big achievement to get to perform at The Nuffield at our age, and are very proud of ourselves!"
John Launder, Development Officer at Age Concern Southampton said "This project is a good example of positive aging, and we hope that the DVD we are commissioning about the production will be an example to other groups in the city."
The project has been made possible thanks to funding from Southampton Primary Care Trust and Age Concern Southampton.
Tickets cost £7 (£5 concessions) and are available from The Nuffield Theatre Box Office (023 8067 1771), Age Concern Southampton (023 8036 8636) and the Suhana Centre (023 8063 6865).
