Kali Theatre, in association with Manchester Contact Theatre, present
ZAMEEN By Satinder Kaur Chohan
The Nuffield is proud to welcome Kali Theatre from 2 - 3 June with Zameen, a beautifully written and moving new play set in the cotton fields of Punjab.
Zameen, which translates as ‘Land', is a haunting new drama which explores the serious issues of environmental damage, and the shocking impact of GM seeds and Western pesticides on the lives of many families on the south Asian sub-continent. Last year two Punjabi farmers a week committed suicide as a result of bankruptcy. Zameen is a topical and timely work exploring the human reality of a major global issue that will ultimately affect us all.
Baba, an ageing farmer, tends to his crop and pins his hopes of prosperity on GM seeds and Western pesticides, while his feckless son, Dhani, dreams of going to America. Baba's dutiful daughter, Chandni, is torn between staying in poverty on the land she loves and following her childhood sweetheart to a more prosperous life abroad. The final reckoning on Baba's land draws out painful truths, forcing the family to the brink of collapse in a fast changing world that is rapidly losing its values.
