As part of the National Year of Reading local author VR Main will be reading excerpts from her debut novel ‘A Woman with No Clothes On' at Castelnau Library on Saturday 18 October. The novel tells of the relationship between painter Edouard Manet and his muse and model Victorine Meurent and won the Trafalgar Squared Prize for work in progress. Cllr Liz Jaeger, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure commented: "We are delighted to welcome a local author to read from her debut novel at this, the latest in a series of events run by the Council to mark the National Year of Reading. "We are very keen to encourage local talent and we can do this by providing opportunities for authors to showcase their work at our libraries. "This is a rare opportunity for residents and visitors alike to meet the author, hear excerpts of the new novel and discuss the themes raised in the story. I hope as many people as possible will come along next Saturday and take part in this session." The novel, set in the 1860s, explores the nature of exploitation and looks at the single-mindedness of Meurent as she pursues her ambition to become a painter. Main graduated in English and Comparative Literature and has a PhD in Elizabethan drama from the Shakespeare Institute. She has worked as a journalist for the BBC and a lecturer at Nigerian and British universities. Main recently had an article published in The Guardian newspaper discussing how throughout history Meurent has been over-looked and dismissed by Manet's biographers. ‘A Woman with No Clothes On' tells a different story focusing on Meurent's determination to step outside of social and gender constraints to become an artist in her own right. The free event will take place at 15.00 on Saturday 18 October at Castelnau Library, 75 Castelnau, London SW13 9RT Although the event is free, booking is essential.
