World Sight Day was celebrated in the borough on Thursday 9 October with an open day featuring the latest gadgets and gizmos for people with poor sight. The event, run by Richmond Council and partners, was held at the Sheen Lane Centre, East Sheen. It featured stalls displaying the latest technology for blind people and those with poor sight, including an electronic magnifier that enlarges text and a device that converts text into audio, as well as advice and information from local organisations. Cllr Denise Carr, Cabinet member for Adult Services, Health and Housing on Richmond Council, said: "The event was a great success, well attended and with some very interesting equipment on show. "Many people will suffer from some form of visual impairment during their lifetime and it is vital they are made aware of the host of local services and organisations dedicated to helping them. "If you are concerned about your sight, or are looking for help or advice I encourage you to contact our Sensory Services Team." The Council's Sensory Services Team work with people over the age of 18 who are blind, partially sighted, deaf or hard of hearing. They offer general advice on coping with sight loss, provide assessments and organise specialist equipment, training and support.
