Orleans House Gallery is organising its first exhibition dedicated to postcards and needs your help. Contributions are being sought from borough residents for Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Edge. The exhibition celebrates the heyday of the postcard from the late 19th century until the recent global dominance of email which has reduced the sending of postcards by 75%. Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Liz Jaeger commented: "This is set to be a fantastic exhibition combining postcards sourced from local and national collectors with the borough art and Richmond Local Studies Collection. "I urge all borough residents who have interesting postcards to contribute to this quirky exhibition which will take us on a nostalgic trip not just down memory lane but also across the globe." The exhibition will focus on themes including the history of the postcard, views of the borough, travel and transport, urban landscapes, nature and cultural identity often taking forays into the bizarre and surreal. In addition artists who are inspired by or incorporate postcards into their work will also be showcased. Courtesy of: www.richmond.gov.uk |
