Over the weekend Harlequins Rugby League staged London's first under 18's Rugby League competition. The event was held on Sunday prior to Quins RL's game against the Saints at Richmond College and was organised by the Harlequins RL Community Department. There is currently no under 18's amateur competition in London and the tournament was set up to promote the game for this age group. It is planned that an amateur competition will run for this age group in 2009. The four teams that participated were West London Sharks, Elmbridge RLFC, Greenwich Admirals and South London Storm. Greenwich Admirals, former club of Quins RL first team stars Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Tony Clubb, were eventual winners on the day defeating South London Storm in the final. Harlequins Rugby League Community Coach Dave Melling commented: 'The whole event was a real success. It was great to see these guys that often have to play up with the seniors competing in their age group.' 'The day generated a lot of interest and it looks very promising that in 2009 the first ever under 18's Rugby League competition will run.' 'This is a very exciting time for Rugby League in and around London at all levels.'
