In July 2008 the Metropolitan Volunteer Police Cadet Competition took place at the Metropolitan Police Recruit Training School in Hendon, North London. 22 Teams took part from Boroughs across London including a team of 12 young people from the Richmond & Hounslow Unit. The team consisting of Volunteer Police Cadets aged between 14 and 19 years took part in the seven elements of the competition. Drill & Inspection, A Road Traffic Scenario, First Aid, Observation, Fitness, Custody Suite Scenario and Orienteering. The Richmond & Hounslow team gained three second places in three of the seven elements. These were; Fitness, run by the Army involving an inflatable assault course and a paintball range. Observation, a complex three-minute video was played and Cadets were asked to answer a number of questions relating to what they had seen. Road Traffic Scenario, Cadets had to deal with the scene of a mock accident. This involved dealing with a victim and arresting a suspect for drink drive. Overall the Richmond & Hounslow Unit gained a very respectable second place in the competition. This is a vast improvement on last years 19th place. Volunteer Police Cadet Team Leader Joe Johnstone said, "This was my first competition as team leader, I was very nervous but our training paid off. I am very pleased for the team". PC Andy Bown coordinator for the Richmond & Hounslow Unit said, "The Cadets are a real credit to the unit, they worked extremely hard for this. At a time when youths are appearing in the press for all the wrong reasons it is good to see that there are youngsters out there who are willing to make a difference". Richmond & Hounslow Volunteer Police Cadets meet every Thursday between 7-9.30pm at the Police Training Centre, Green Street, Sunbury.
