Programme of talks:'With more than regal pomp'The magnificent state funeral of Oliver Cromwell
Roy Sherwood

The day will begin with an exploration of Cromwell's splendorous funeral, the likes of which have never been seen again. From lying in state at Somerset House, you'll follow Cromwell's regally clad effigy on its progress through London's heavily thronged streets to royal Westminster Abbey. In the process, you'll discover the funeral's significance to our understanding of the nature of the Protectoral regime.

The culture of the Cromwellian Court
Patrick Little

Dr Little will survey recent research exploring the cultural aspects of the Cromwellian court, including art and architecture, music, literature, fashion, horse-breeding and other outdoor pursuits. It is becoming increasingly clear that the protectoral court was in many ways just as magnificent as a royal court, and its influence on culture could be just as great.

'A door of hope is open' The Protectorate's achievementsPeter Gaunt

Peter Gaunt's lecture will conclude the day, assessing Cromwell's aims and achievements as Lord Protector, from his inauguration as head of state at the end of 1653 through to his death in September 1658. He'll explore the issues Cromwell inherited upon becoming Protector, the problems he passed to his son in autumn 1658, as well as the wider and longer term achievements and legacy of the Cromwellian Protectorate.

About the lecturers:

Roy Sherwood is an author and historian. His publications include the only two full-length works devoted to the regal aspects of the Cromwellian Protectorate. In The Court of Oliver Cromwell he reconstructs the Protectoral household. In Oliver Cromwell: King in all but name, 1653-1658 he reveals the extent to which monarchical rule was restored, together with royal pomp, pageantry and courtly splendour, during the Protectorate.

Dr Patrick Little is a senior research fellow at the History of Parliament Trust in London. His books include The Cromwellian Protectorate (Boydell and Brewer 2007) and Parliaments and Politics during the Cromwellian Protectorate (Cambridge University Press 2007).

Peter Gaunt is Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Chester and the Chairman of the Cromwell Association. He has written and published widely on many aspects of the military, political and constitutional history of the mid-17th century, including several studies of the Civil War, two biographies of Cromwell and a range of specialist articles and chapters on aspects of Protectoral central government.
