Handbag theft and assault – Newbury - 02-07-2008

Police are appealing for witnesses to a handbag theft and assault in Newbury.

The incident happened shortly after 6.30pm on Friday (27/6).

A handbag was stolen from an Audi A6 parked at Burger King, in Greenham Road, and as the offender ran off towards the train station he was pursued by a number of people.

He was cornered in Ashfield Court where he was assaulted. He sustained a single knife wound to his leg that required hospital treatment.

Det Con Emma Lineham, from Newbury CID, said: "We are keen to speak to any witnesses who saw anyone running from the direction of Burger King following the incident or who witnessed the assault in the Ashfield Court area."

*A 17-year-old boy, from Newbury, has been arrested on suspicion of GBH and possession of an offensive weapon and has been released on bail to return to Newbury police station in August. A 27-year-old man, from Newbury, has been arrested on suspicion of theft from a vehicle, and he has been released on bail to return to Newbury police station later this month.
