Summer Nights 2008 - 30 June-8 September 2008
|
THE Summer Nights Open Day launched the county's BIG crackdown on alcohol related crime and anti-social behaviour. Many of the agencies supporting the campaign were on display at Police Headquarters in Hutton for the lucky 7,000 people that secured tickets to the event. Visitors enjoyed the attractions on offer including the opportunity to see the force helicopter; sit in police vehicles and fire engines; see inside an ambulance; watch a hot pan fire demonstration; visit the police control centre and watch 999 calls being taken and have their fingerprints and mug shot taken by forensic science staff. Assistant Chief Constable Chris Weigh said: "The Open Day was a massive success with everyone attending thoroughly enjoying their day out. It also signals the beginning of the two month campaign across Lancashire. Summer Nights 08 aims to tackle and prevent anti-social behaviour, promote personal health and safety and to build on the positive behaviour of most young people rather than always focusing on those who chose to commit crime and misbehave. "We have two messages for two distinct groups of people. The first to adults in Lancashire is ‘drink sensibly this summer' - we don't want to stop anyone enjoying alcohol, we just ask that people drink sensibly in a way that won't cause harm to themselves or other people. We want to make sure that people don't have to suffer the consequences of disrespectful behaviour. "To young people in the county (under 18) we ask that they ‘give respect to get respect' - in other words have fun and enjoy yourself but don't do it at the expense of others. We would ask that all young people think about their actions and how they could be viewed by others as misbehaving. We want young people to give respect to others to get respect back. "Along with our Summer Nights partner agencies, we will be pushing these two messages throughout the summer months with the aim of everyone enjoying themselves and behaving sensibly." During July and August, the Summer Nights campaign will have themed weeks aimed at raising awareness of the multi-agency activity taking place across Lancashire. The theme weeks are as follows: W/C June 30th Launch week (introduction to what you are doing in your division) W/C July 7th Criminal damage (focusing on impact and effects) W/C July 14th Water safety (urging young people to take care when playing in/near water) W/C July 21st Positive contributions of young people (we will be pushing the celebrating young people awards during this week) W/C July 28th Drink driving (linking with the LPfRS and the national campaign) W/C August 4th Under age drinking (trading standards and drinks industry leads) W/C August 11th Fire safety (LFRS leading here) W/C August 18th Alcohol related crime (violent crime including domestic violence/antisocial behaviour/noise/criminal damage) W/C August 25th Personal/health safety W/C Sept 1st Round up/Build up to the Celebrating Young People's awards.
