Police appeal for witnesses after Pompey fan attacked in Southsea - 08-05-2008
|
Detectives in Portsmouth are appealing for witnesses after a Portsmouth fan was kicked to the ground and attacked after asking a group to calm down for being rowdy and running out in front of traffic.
The group had been asked to leave the Ship Anson Pub on the Hard because of their behaviour but continued to drink in the street and were shouting Portsmouth chants and kicking out at taxis.
The 46-year-old, who was attacked, had asked them to calm down saying if they were true Portsmouth fans they wouldn't act that way.
They then set upon him. Several other people passing by tried to come to his rescue but were also attacked.
The attack happened shortly after 12.30am on Sunday, May 4.
The man suffered a broken leg and serious facial injuries and has since had to undergo an operation at the QA Hospital in Portsmouth.
The attackers are described as all white men mostly in their 20s and one white woman. She was about 5ft tall, slim with long blonde hair.
One of the men was dressed all in black and was about 6ft 2 inches tall with dark brown hair. Another was blond and around 5ft 2 inches tall.
A third man was 5ft 8inches tall and had short brown hair and a green top. There were at least two other men involved. Police have been viewing CCTV and have spoken to some witnesses but still need others to come forward.
Officers are releasing a number of pictures of people who they think are vital witnesses. Detective Constable Pete Bambury from Portsmouth CID said: "This was nasty attack that ended up in mass brawl.
"I can't believe the attackers could be real Portsmouth fans because if they are they attacked a dedicated and respected fan of the club who is also involved in a lot of charity work.
"It is essential I speak to anyone that tried to help this man or who witnesses any of the attack. I'd like to hear from anyone who recognises themselves or others in the CCTV we are releasing. We will be making every effort to trace those responsible for this attacj and bring them to justice."
Anyone with information is asked to Contact DC Bambury or the Operation Shapwick team at Fratton Police station on 0845 045 45 45 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
A 24-year-old-man has been arrested in connection with the case and released on bail until June 27 while enquiries continue. News Source: www.hampshire.police.uk |
